General Anaesthetics (GA)

Most children are awake when they have their pictures taken at The Monash Children’s Hospital. Sometimes you may need to be asleep for your pictures.

A general anaesthetic (GA) is a medicine that helps you go into a special sleep while you have your pictures taken. There is a doctor called an Anaesthetist, who will make sure you stay asleep during your pictures, and will wake you up when your pictures have been taken. When you wake up you might be in a different room called ‘Recovery room' and your mum or dad will be right there beside you when you wake up.

It’s important to fast for 6 hours before having a general anaesthetic – that means no food or milk. You can keep having water or clear drinks (like apple juice) until 2 hours before.
